Note the difference in views and remember that the Speaker of the House holds far more cards than a Committee Chairman. The quotes below are from the December 9 news stream, BEFORE U.S. labor leaders formally endorsed the ostensibly confidential changes to the USMCA text.

It's also a good case study in why humans are better than bots at reading the news.

The most important development was actually a leak buried in the middle of the story: AFL-CIO President Trumka and President Trump met by telephone regarding the USMCA:

"Trump spoke earlier with AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka about the negotiations, a person familiar with the call said. Trumka, one of the most powerful U.S. labor leaders, has been a major party to the negotiations, pushing for stronger labor enforcement provisions that ensure Mexican workers are allowed to unionize."

So before you believe the headlines, be sure you read all the cold, hard facts first. The labor union leaks were more dispositive of policy direction than the quotes from the Speaker of the House yesterday.
